MUSIC'S INAMORATAS
Tonya Dyson
The "Master Navigator"
As one of the most notable artists in the Memphis Neo-Soul Movement, Tonya Dyson has an innate ability to draw the listener into her music, which is beautfully painted with finite melodies and minimal vocal acrobatics. The latter has often proven to be trite in most of today's music, and Tonya's apparent desire to steer clear from those as often as possible proves why she is the "Master Navigator". Her current single, "Find My Way", which is available on iTunes, tells the story of a woman who has had enough of the struggles of her relationship and vows to find her way without her partner. After listening to the track a record 27 times in one day I give "Find My Way" ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Dutchess
The "Labor & Delivery"
Reigning queen of Memphop, the formidable Dutchess proves why she is one of the most supreme femcees of our time. Her flow, is timeless, poetic, and backed by a powerful delivery, which is shown throughout her critically acclaimed mixtape "The Delivery". She consistently displays why she has been a successful artists, all while staying true to herself. I remember seeing her perform live for the first time in 2012 (even though we'd met prior) and thinking to myself *Lyte As a Rock*. For a hip-hop head like myself, I saw her and the instant gratification I held after hearing the MC Lyte classic for the first time almost 2 decades ago, overwhelmed me in that very moment. Dutchess is an awesome representation of female artists, especially those who do it for the love of the culture.

Shenea'
The "Songstress"
Any Musicologist knows that combining elements of Pop with R&B can be a hit or miss situation. More often it has been a requiem for disaster. However, Memphian Shenea proves this to be an effortless feat on her debut album "Introducing Shenea". From the soultry ballad "Come Back to Me" to the up-tempo summer classic "You", Shenea' undeniably bears her heart and soul in this album and proves why she is, The Songstress. She has also appeared as a backing vocalist for musical showman Devin Crutcher and as a finalist to open for R&B mega superstar, Brandy. "Introducing Shenea" album receives ★ ★ ★ ★

LaShonte'
The "Princess of Pop"
What's a musical dynasty without an heiress? LaShonte' Anderson has been Memphis' reigning princess of Pop for the past 3 years. From BET to Sirrus XM's Shade 45, LaShonte has been pushing Memphis music to the mainstream forefront. As a ceritified ultimate "threat", LaShonte' is well versed in singing, dancing, modeling, and acting, having also appeared in the Cannes Film Festival fan favorite, and multi award winning short film 'Bookin'. LaShonte is scheduled to release her highly anticipated, debut EP "Training to Kill Monsters: in the Spring of 2014. The lead single "Trained to Kill" has been featured on numerous radio stations including Liberated Audio (securing the top spot in requests and ratings two consecutive weeks). For that reason, I give "Trained to Kill" the single, ★ ★ ★½

Da Ladie
The "Hustler"
Its no secret that women in the music industry have to work a little harder than the men. For many of them they put their hearts and soul into the industry, just to end up conforming to those standards. That all changed when Memphis native Da Ladie fostered an ingenius idea not only to make her own rules, but to beat the industry at it's own game. She decided to unite a group of local, female artists and create a cypher series that would detail their stories which all have different background settings. The first installment, took the city by surprise marking its first 10 female cypher comprised of rappers and singers all united by the common bond of music. It was an instant success, garnering thousands of views within the first few days. The video, shot by renowned videographer Isaiah Conyers and the production by Liberated Audio's Unsigned Hype finalist ChaSe Dollax sent social media on a wave of hi's..and lows. Greatness is no stranger to controversy, as Da Ladie found herself amidst several social media altercations(more notably the one with yours truly) in defense of her project. Even with that, the series continued, with the successful release of "Hi Haters" and "Unity", respectively. Da Ladie has shown that even with adversity, you can't knock the hustle. I give the Memphis Queens Hustle & Flow Cypher Series ★ ★ ★½

"Unity"
1/3 of the Fantastik 3 Production team, Skybeats has made a name for herself as one of the most intricate composers Memphis music has seen. Her work is on the top of the most sought after production lists and her skill varies from not just recording artists tracks, but original scores for movies, commercials, and the recent addition to her repitore, tutorial/review video themes. Music seemingly comes as first nature to Sky as she is found making music pretty much everywhere she goes. There isn't an artist she has encountered from Memphis to San Diego that hasn't metaphorically killed for an opportunity to work with her. Skybeats has proven herself to be a staple in the music community and vows to continue pushing Fantastik 3 to the forefront with groundbreaking material.

Javae
The "CoMpetitioN"
Knowing no limits, Javae has shown why she is clearly a front runner in any competition. This accomplished rapper and singer contiues to release quality music and accept any challenge. Most recently, she changed her stage monniker from CoMpetitioN to her birth name, citing that it was time for her to transcend and the former has taken her as far as it could. Being on the proverbial fence about this artist for some time, I was blown away by her powerhouse performance at the first Lyfe is Dope event back in Septemeber of this year. She aggressively attacked a short 16 bars to create an out-of-body experience for those who witnessed. Javae can be heard on several local artists' projects as a feature and also on Liberated Audio with her latest single "Heartbreak" which details the aftermath of a failed love story. This piece shows Javae as an accomplished and disciplined singer. The single earns ★ ★ ★ ★

Arean Alston
The "Believer"
As the saying goes, "Nothing beats a failure but a try". Landmark singer/songwriter/producer Arean Alston, put her heart on the line and risked it all to become one of the most talked about artists of 2013. "Believe" was her almost decade-long vision and she has executed beautifully. Having made several television and live music appearences (being scheduled multiple times and the Hard Rock Cafe- Memphis), Arean is living out her dream of musical success. Her passion combined with faith has kept this artist on a positive path and she has been an inspiration to many, including her musical peers. Her album Believe is setting the standard in the Inspirational music genre and is reminiscent of Oleta Adams' 1990, award winning album, "Circle of One". The Believe albums' title single pairs ultra smooth vocals with live instrumentation, creating a generational masterpiece. The single earns ★ ★ ★ ★½

Megan J
The "Sweetheart"
Listen to "Texting and Drving" by Megan J
Let's face it. Everyone loves Megan J. With grace, a heart-warming smile, and high-spirited personality to match, it's no secret why she has become the local industry's undisputed "sweetheart". We've all had a chance to witness Megan develop as an artists from her first release "Stages" to the present-day "Texting and Driving" era. Produced by the imcomparable Johnathan Davenport, "Texting and Drving" has reached local and national success being awarded top spot 4 consecutive weeks in a row (overall 10 weeks in Top 10) on Liberated Audio, and being chosen out of thousands to participate in global brand AT&T's anti- texting & driving campaign. The single earns ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Whatitis
The "Veteran"
Its no simple task being a professional, but Memphian Whatitis (pronounced What-It-Is) makes it appear as a cakewalk. Taking the passive-aggressive approach to her flow, Whatitis has forged herself as a veteran femcee. Recently, she became a part of the city's premiere battle league "Iron Mouth Battle League" competing against fan favorite Almenjoi and the distinguished Iron Mic Coallition's Jason Da Hater(which was the first male/female battle in league history). In an interview with Whatitis earlier this year, I learned that she is one of the few artists who doesn't do it for fame or money, but because the music lives within her and it a way to share her gift with so many others.
